Work with us to help achieve our goal of ending shutoffs and securing community-controlled, affordable, reliable, clean energy for all
We seek to work with frontline organizations and public sector institutions like federal agencies, public utility commissions, and local governments.
Frontline Capacity Building
We partner with organizations in marginalized communities that pursue energy democracy and justice. EEP staff and U of M graduate students support upwards of 20 frontline partners annually. Our technical assistance includes quantitative and qualitative analysis, GIS, graphic design, communications, program design, policy strategy, and fundraising.
For an example of this work, see the Golden State Energy Report.
Democratizing the Power of Data
We have multiple tools to make data more accessible, like our energy equity fact sheets for every state, energy equity framework, public engagement budgeting tool, pathway to universal 6% energy burdens calculator, and energy equity map. We are working to fill priority data gaps related to reliability, affordability, and shutoffs.
Transforming Public Institutions
We need receptive public sector institutions to build an energy system that is responsive to the frontlines. To that end, EEP works with institutions like Public Service Commissions to create agency-wide equity frameworks to transform the way they operate.
To see what this looks like in practice, take a look at our short article about our work on 2023 IL Gas Rate Cases, our Guiding Principles Process Overview, and the draft guiding principles we developed with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.
Influencing Policy, Regulation, and Public Opinion
To transform the energy system, the EEP has intervened in rate cases, supported alternative rate structures, and published articles highlighting failures in the current system. We aim to continue this work by creating a database of model legislation, rules and testimony, support Tribal-owned clean energy generation projects, and more. For examples, see this article about our response to the Biden administration’s environmental justice scorecard or this article about vulnerabilities to extreme heat.
